Not Just Sunday: Bringing God Into Your Everyday Life

If you are like me, you love sitting in church on Sunday worshipping God and hearing the Word. There are times that His presence is so real and you can actually feel Him on the inside and it is so peaceful and wonderful that you could stay there forever. You tell yourself that you will hold onto this and never let it go.

Then…

By 11:00am Monday morning you have already forgotten about Him with the rush and stress of the work week, kids and the never ending to-do list. At night when you are getting ready for bed He pops into your mind and you want to spend time with Him, but you are so tired that you can barely keep your eyes open and as soon as your head hits the pillow you are fast asleep, and the same thing happens the next day and the next.

Here is the amazing thing. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the one who created the entire universe longs to have a close, personal, intimate relationship with you. He wants to be a part of your life and help you. God is not far off and watching from a distance with this stern look on His face waiting for you to mess up.

Who God is

In Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul compares God and His church to marriage. We the church are His bride, which means that individually we are His bride as well and He is our husband.

How long do you think a marriage would last when the husband and wife only spend 1-2 hours together a week in a group of people and never alone? Not very long. In my opinion I wouldn’t even call that a marriage.

The responsibility belongs to us to develop the relationship. God has already done His part when Jesus died on the cross allowing us unlimited, unrestrained access to God. Because of His sacrifice it also allowed the Holy Spirit to come and live on the inside of us.

1 John 4:13 says, “By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.” So we are never alone. God is always with us.

Maybe we need to change how we think

So instead of thinking that we go to church on Sunday to meet with God, maybe we should look at it as a bunch of people who carry God with them, get together and corporately experience God. The rest of the week is spent getting to know God as the lover of our soul. Pretty awesome thought, isn’t it? We don’t have to go looking for God because He is right there inside waiting to have communion with us.

How do we connect with God every day?

The first thing is you have to do is believe and trust that God loves you and wants to be a part of your life every day. It is very hard to hear God when you don’t really believe that He has your best interests at heart.

Then comes the practical things we can do. One thing I love about God is that He understands how we work and that we need the practical how to’s sometimes to understand things.

So what some things we can do?

1. Start your day off with God

For each person this will be different, but for me one of the first things I do before I even get out of bed is that I lie there and on the inside of me I talk to God. Did you know that God can hear your thoughts? You don’t have to speak out loud for Him to hear you. I thank Him for a new day and ask Him to be a part of this day and I listen for a few minutes. Also within the first half an hour of my day I take a few minutes to read His Word.

2. Talk to Him

Throughout the day I take little breaks and talk to Him, like when I am driving or even doing my writing on my computer. These aren’t long breaks, just a minute or two. It is a way of me remembering that God is always with me. If you aren’t use to doing this then set an alarm 3-4 times a day when you know that you usually have time. When it goes off, intentionally stop and spend a minute with God.

3. Look for Him

When I started looking for evidences of God in my life during the day, I found them. Little miracles of God’s love for me, but I wouldn’t have seen them if I hadn’t been looking.

4. Ask

Many times we go through things and we don’t know what to do. Stop for a minute and ask God to help you. You will be amazed at how God answers you.

5. Just stop and take a deep breath

Sometimes, experiencing God is as easy as stopping, closing your eyes and taking a deep breath while thinking about Him. Many times when we intentionally stop and slow down it allows God to make His Presence know.

6. Get good teaching on the Word of God

The Bible is God’s love letter to us. If you want to get to know who He is then you need to study God’s Word. Attend a mid-week bible study or find an online Bible-based teacher that you like and listen to their teachings. If you have to sacrifice TV or Facebook time to get the teaching you need to learn who God is then do it.

7. End your day with God

As I get into bed at night I spend a few minutes to thank God and ask Him to be with me while I sleep. It helps me to relax and fall asleep.

I can’t say this enough. God loves you now and forever. He wants to be so close to you that you will even hear the whispers of His heart. He wants you to become a person who can live victoriously and you can only do it through His love.

So what are you are waiting for? Go spend some time with God.
