Becoming a Christian is the most important decision you are ever going to make. And when you choose to become one, the course of your life will change, for the better. So here’s what you need to know to help you start your faith journey.

Why You Need A Saviour

Nobody is perfect. This doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone. We like to simply call it being “human”. But these imperfections actually point toward our sinful nature.

Man used to have a relationship with God. But because man rebelled against Him, this relationship was severed.

We all carry this sinful nature as human beings. Because of this, man was separated from communion with God. The apostle Paul said it clearly, “For all have sinned, and the wages of sin is death.”

No one is exempted from the cost of sin. Whenever death is mentioned in the Bible, it speaks of more than a physical death; it’s an eternal one.

So what then can man do to save his soul? Since man is inherently sinful, there is nothing he can do to escape death. But God made a way to redeem man from sin and save him from eternal death.

God planned the coming of a Messiah to be the savior of mankind. But until that time came, man was supposed to make sacrifices, usually in the form of a lamb. And that sacrifice symbolized man’s redemption for a period of time.

Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior

Jesus came to fulfill the role of the Messiah. By performing miracles such as healing the sick and raising the dead, He showed His followers that He was more than just a man. He was the Son of God.

Jesus became the sacrifice to end sin and death once and for all. He suffered greatly to accomplish this purpose. He died on the cross and paid the full price for man’s redemption just as it was prophesied centuries before.

After Jesus died, He was buried in a tomb. He rose again after three days and appeared to His followers. More than 500 people witnessed Jesus walking among them. Soon after, He ascended into heaven where He is now preparing a place for us.

What Does This Mean For You?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16

First, you have to BELIEVE.

This is where faith begins. Do you believe that Jesus came to earth and died for you? Do you believe He paid the price (a punishment of death) you were supposed to pay? If you believe this to be so and are willing to place your faith in Him, then you’re ready for the next step.

Next, you need to REPENT.

Repentance goes hand-in-hand with faith. And repentance is more than just turning away from your sin. The Greek word for repentance is “metanoia.” It implies a change of heart and mind. This is what becoming a Christian really means – a daily change of your mind and heart.

Are you willing to acknowledge your sin and repent before God? Are you willing to submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ? Are you ready to commit your life to Him?

If your answers to these questions are YES, then you are ready to become a Christian! What you need to do is confess all of these things and dedicate your life to following Jesus!

The apostle Paul made it simple but powerful. In Romans 10:9, he said, “…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Here’s a simple prayer you can pray right now to become a Christian.

Lord, I confess I am a sinner. I am asking for Your forgiveness. I know now that You died on the cross as the penalty for my sin. I recognize that Your mercy and grace is a gift. And it’s all because of Your great love and not out of my own merit. Cleanse me and make me Your child. By faith, I receive You into my heart as the Son of God. Jesus, be the Lord and Savior of my life. From now on, help me to live for You. My life is Yours, Jesus. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer, then you are now a Christian! You have made the best decision of your life! What an exciting moment. For you have determined what’s in store for this life and the next. Your eternal life is secured!

This is just the beginning. You have started a journey of relationship with God. You made a commitment to becoming more Christ-like (Christian). There are a lot of things you’ve yet to discover. And you are now part of a global family of believers.

We highly encourage you to talk to someone about this. Be it anyone in your family, or any close friend. And also, you can reach out to someone you know who’s already a Christian. It’s important to find people to journey with as you grow in your faith.

Becoming A New Creation

Becoming a Christian is the start of a new life. You grow into the person God has created you to be. It’s a wonderful journey of transformation.

The apostle Paul is probably one of the greatest examples of becoming a new creation. Before he met God, he persecuted the early Christians and even participated in their execution. Then God found him and turned his life completely upside-down.

Paul became Christianity’s greatest advocate and wrote half of the New Testament. Many people couldn’t believe the change that happened in his life. It was nothing short of a miracle. Paul describes conversion like becoming “a new creation.”

You’ve most likely heard of someone who’s gone through a similar change. These stories are great and inspiring. But the Christian journey of change doesn’t happen overnight. Even after Paul’s dramatic conversion, he had to learn to walk out his faith daily and connect with other believers to help him grow.

The Bible likens this change to a seed planted by a river. As the seed gets nourished daily, it gradually grows into a mighty tree providing shade and bearing fruit. Your life becomes a seed in God’s hands. How you live and allow yourself to be nourished determines the growth in your walk as a Christian.

It may take years to get where you want to be. But there’s no rush. To some, the journey is faster. For others, maybe longer. No matter what it is, it’s always a beautiful story of how God has turned a life around.

What will be your story?

Finding Eternal Treasure

Here’s another story that paints a beautiful picture of what Christianity is like.

There once was a man who worked plowing the fields. As he was turning over the soil, he unearthed buried treasure. Realizing the value of the find, he decided to hide the treasure back in the earth again.

Law stated that if a workman came across treasure in a situation like this, legal ownership would go to the one who owned the field. The man could have stolen the treasure and sold it. Instead, he happily sold everything that he had and bought the field from the landowner.

We occasionally hear stories like this field laborer. A French climber who found a chest full of sapphire and rubies. An old janitor who found a million dollars in the basement of an abandoned building. We often dream of something like this happening to us. But this is exactly what happens when you decide to follow Christ.

Becoming a Christian is like finding life’s greatest treasure. People may not be looking for God at first. But just like the field worker, they suddenly stumbled upon the truth about Christ.

Some won’t see the value because all they see is the physical world. They fail to look below the surface to find the treasure that is hidden. But there is great value in finding eternity.

This is exactly what the disciples of Jesus did. They were willing to give up their lives for this eternal treasure. They were unafraid of the physical death because they knew they had eternal life in Christ. They all have found eternal treasure that far outweighs anything this world can offer.

The disciples didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. But they were sure of where they were going.

The Promise Of A Greater Tomorrow

It’s no question that tomorrow is never promised. Life happens. So what we do is plan and hope for the best.

But what if tomorrow doesn’t come at all?

My grandfather went to sleep on a regular night, then he just never woke up. He was sixty. One of my friends died of leukemia years ago. He was only nine. We mostly think of dying when we are old, but we can’t be sure of it.

“Life is short” sounds cliche, but it’s true! The Bible even describes our lives as but “a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” Anybody’s life could end without a moment’s notice.

Many would ask themselves, “What if I died today? Or tomorrow? What would happen? Is there life after death? Do I know where I’d be going? Am I 100% sure?”

Whether you die today, tomorrow, or sometime in the future, one thing is sure – WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!

Having become a Christian today, you can be confident of where you’re going. In fact, Jesus said that He’s preparing a place for us in heaven. How awesome is that?! You don’t have to be afraid of dying.

Though we can’t be absolutely sure about tomorrow, we can be sure of where we’re going when we die. Eternal life is the assurance to whoever believes in Him. That’s the power of the cross of Jesus! He did more than just pay your debt; He won you eternal life!

Make sure to submit the form below if you did become a Christian so someone can help you on your journey. We can help you connect to a church and help you with questions and support.

And if you didn’t say the prayer earlier, and you want to now, here’s a short prayer you can pray now:

Jesus, I repent of all of my sins. And I am asking for Your forgiveness. Thank you for dying on the cross for a sinner like me. From this day forward, I am committing my life to You. Become the Lord and Savior of my life. In Your name, Amen.
