Living for the Future

The future can seem like a scary thing if we let it. There will always be fear of the unknown, especially in our world where we crave security, certainty, and control. But we don’t have to be afraid or worry about our future. We have God on our side.

From the moment we were saved, we’ve had God on our side making a path for us and paving the way for our future within His intricate plan. He wants blessings for us and has delivered us from the destruction we were headed towards.

We have great things to look forward to, and not just in the afterlife. Here and now, God wants us to live joyfully and abundantly.

Our Thoughts

However, God still requires something from us to make this bright future a reality. He wants us to do our part while He continues to do His. Aside from us daily walking with God and responding to His calling, He wants us to change our way of thinking.

Of course, God is the one who transforms our thinking, but we must take steps to allow Him to do this. God wants this because He knows that our thoughts and attitude influence our future.

Here’s how this works: What we think about the present and our current situation leads to what we say to ourselves and to others around us, which leads to us and those we’ve spoken to internalizing those words and living them out in the future.

We tend to believe what we hear over and over again, whether it’s us telling ourselves something or someone telling us. It becomes ingrained in our thinking. That’s why we have to be so careful how we speak, and the best way to do that is to consider what we’re thinking first.

Romans 12:2 says, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed, by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The key in this verse is that our minds need to be renewed – the way we think. It is way too easy to listen to the world and then think the way the world thinks. The world’s pattern of thinking is all around us in TV and movies, on billboards, even in some of our peers. We’re constantly bombarded with the lies of the world, and it takes great effort to not believe them and start thinking that way.

We must instead let Christ renew our minds by letting the Spirit fill us with His word and His truth. And this is a constant thing. Since we’re constantly in the world hearing lies, we must constantly combat this by filling up with the truth, focusing on the Word and what God is doing.

As Romans 12:2 says, only by renewing our minds can we discern what God’s will is for us and know which path to walk down to get to the future we want. If our thoughts are too clouded by the world’s thoughts we won’t be able to see it and we won’t know what we’re working towards. We need to have a positive goal to work towards. Otherwise, life is just empty and meaningless.

Our Words

Once we have our thoughts aligned with the thoughts of Christ, our words will reflect Him as well. 1st John says we have an anointing resting inside us as Christians. When we’re conscious of this fact, when we’re prompted by God to speak to someone, the Spirit will flow through our words and cause transformation. People will gain life through our words. Our words will echo into the future.

God has made our tongue a powerhouse for good or evil. It’s up to us how we use it, but either way, the effect is powerful.

Controlling our tongue, though, is hard. The tongue sometimes seems to have a mind of its own. It’s much easier to control if our thoughts are already aligned with the things of God. Since our words reflect our thoughts, if we’re thinking positive spiritual things, positive spiritual words will naturally flow out of us.

Of course, things happen that cause our thinking to become negative, which can lead to negative words, but it’s much easier to recover from this if that’s not our normal pattern of thought.

The Next Generation

Our words don’t just benefit our peers and are not just meant to affect the present. Our words can also massively benefit the next generation, namely our children.

Jeremiah 31:17 says, There is hope for your future, declares the Lord, and your children shall come back to their own community.

If we want the next generation to follow the Lord, then we have to start now by speaking life into our children. We need to constantly tell them they are loved by God and that they are His. We need to speak truth and grace into their lives and speak blessings over them. We need to speak into them about their future.

By doing so, we’ll be setting them on the path for the future God wants for them. If we speak positive things over them, they will grow internalizing those things and then live them in the future.

The Choice

So, although God will always do His part in blessing our future, we must still do our part. It’s our choice to take the steps we need to take in order to change the way we think. Meditating on God’s Word, spending time with Him in prayer, and worshiping Him are actions we take when we choose to have our minds transformed by Christ.

Life or death, blessing or curse? The choice is up to us. We’re not only choosing for us, but also for our children. So choose life. Make your home a heavenly atmosphere. Doing so will put your children on a path for great things in the future.
