What is faith?
One definition is that faith is believing in the unseen. God is not visible to us in our day-to-day life. God asks us to believe in Him though we do not see Him. Yet when we step out in faith and believe in Him, we begin to see evidence of Him everywhere.
Faith has great power. With faith the impossible becomes possible, the hopeless find hope and the weary find strength.
When your faith is wavering and you need some help, contemplate the following quotes. Each of these quotes reveal how faith can help you endure trials, trust God in difficult times, draw near to God, and find joy in times of sorrow. They will give you the strength to make that step of faith that allows miracles to happen.
“The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye of Reason.” — Benjamin Franklin
Shutting the eye of reason is turning off the doubtful thoughts and worldly reasons not to believe and allowing God to show himself. Many people reject faith because they think that intelligent people cannot believe in God. They put their faith in worldly wisdom and cut themselves off from God’s wisdom. Franklin continued his thought by saying, “the morning daylight appears plainer when you put out your candle.” By turning off those things that obscure our view of God’s work, we are able to see him plainly. Our candle can be our own arrogant wisdom.
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”― C.S. Lewis
God’s handiwork is in everything around us. The beauty and complexity of creation speaks of a loving God and builds our faith in him. In faith we look around us and see God everywhere. Faith opens our eyes to a new kind of vision and gives us the light of God to see by.
“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”― Corrie ten Boom
There are few things we can rely on in this world. Not knowing what the future will bring can cause us deep anxiety and worry. The future can be frightening unless we realize God holds it in His loving hands. Place your trust in God and his unchanging ways and the future cannot terrify you any longer.
“All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Our past experiences help us to trust God for our future needs. Emerson could see God working in his life and knew from his experiences that God would continue to provide for his needs and strengthen him because God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What he has done before, he will do again.
“Few are they who by faith touch Him; multitudes are they who throng about Him.”- St Augustine
Although there are many people who say they believe in God, only some of these people truly know him. True knowledge of God goes beyond the mind, and into the heart. If you touch and are touched by God, His Spirit enters your heart and changes your very nature. Even the devil knows who God is; you must strive to know God personally. True faith causes us to spend time with God, praying and learning about Him and doing His will. Just knowing about Him is the not the same as having a relationship with Him. God created us to be his children.
“To love means loving the unlovable. To forgive means pardoning the unpardonable. Faith means believing the unbelievable. Hope means hoping when everything seems hopeless.”― G.K. Chesterton
Believing the unbelievable is what God asks of us. It means stepping out of our comfort zone and taking risks in our faith. When we take the step of faith, power is unleashed by our faithful obedience and things move in heaven and on earth.
“Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees, And looks to God alone; Laughs at impossibilities, And cries it shall be done.”– Charles Wesley
Faith helps us to depend on God alone and see His promises. Faith gives us the strength to do the impossible. With faith we can walk in confidence that what we hope for will come to pass.
“I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.”― Abraham Lincoln
When we are cruelly pressed by circumstances and in despair for our very lives we discover how empty faith is in anything but God. Where else can we go but to God? He is the only one who answers. All else is empty and worthless. All our wisdom and the wisdom of those around us cannot take the place of God.
“You have as much laughter as you have faith.”― Martin Luther
Faith brings joy along with it. Even when things don’t look good, we know they will get better. We can laugh and be confident in the better days to come.
“Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, Faith looks up”― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Sorrow has us always looking back to the bad things that have happened. It keeps us dwelling in the past. Worry has us expecting the next bad event. When you have faith in God, you don’t worry because you know God will come through. Faith is looking up into the eyes of our unfailingly good God and knowing He will do what is best.
I hope these inspirational quotes have built up your faith and given you strength when you are weak. Faith is taking a step into the unknown, without being able to see just where you are going, but trusting that God knows what lies ahead.
So faith endures when all else fails. It brings us laughter, it helps our gaze turn upward, makes the impossible possible, helps us believe the unbelievable, helps us to trust God for those things we have not yet seen. It relieves us of worry and fear.
Faith is trust that God is able to take care of all aspects of our lives. Step out in faith and expect to see the hand of God all around you.
